Background

In accordance with the Government’s decision from late last year Sweden will re-open an embassy in Peru. The embassy in Lima will be inaugurated November 22 by the Swedish Minister for the EU and Trade.  The main focus of the new embassy will be to strengthen the trade and investment ties between the two countries as well as to promote a political dialogue on issues of mutual interest.

Peru, with its 30 million inhabitants, is the fourth largest country in South America in terms of population. Its economic growth is among the highest in the region. At the same time, substantial investments are needed in infrastructure, education and welfare services. The positive economic and political developments in recent years have led to increased interest in trade and investment in the Peruvian market.

Initially, the embassy in Peru will engage in activities such as sustainable transport and  mining, gender equality and corporate social responsibility (CSR). The embassy will also follow the political and economic situation in Peru. A joint road map that will guide the bilateral collaboration in the coming years is being elaborated by Sweden and Peru. During the inauguration of the Embassy of Sweden in Lima, Minister Linde and the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs will sign the document on the road map.

Scope of the seminar

The seminar will present opportunities for strengthened Swedish-Peruvian relations from different angles. This includes political, commercial and cultural ties, as well as the collaboration for increased exchange in research and higher education, gender equality and sustainable development. Minister Ann Linde will introduce the Swedish Government’s perspective on the opportunities that the opening of the embassy will give. The Peruvian Ambassador to Sweden, José Beraún Araníbar will present Peru- from a cultural, political and economic perspective. In a panel discussion, Swedish companies will present their experiences from the Peruvian market and discuss opportunities for increased bilateral trade. The Swedish Council for Higher Education and the Swedish Institute will explore other areas of collaboration. The seminar will also introduce the cultural ties between our countries and the work with the Paracas-textiles.
